About Ultrasound

How does an ultrasound work?

An ultrasound exam uses an instrument called a transducer, which is placed over the area of interest.

The transducer works like a microphone and loudspeaker because it transmits and receives sound. The transducer sends a stream of high frequency sound waves into the body and detects their echoes as they bounce off of internal structures.

Different structures in the body reflect the sound waves differently depending on their location.

A computer translates the returning soundwaves to generate images of the structure(s) on a monitor.
