About Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound Services at Sound Medical Imaging
Sound Medical Imaging is a full service ultrasound facility. We are specialists in medical ultrasound. We are the only healthcare provider in the North Country of New Hampshire performing 4D ultrasound. Our staff is composed of Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers who will spend time explaining the exam to you.
Abdominal Ultrasound
This is used to evaluate various organs, blood vessels and soft tissues of the abdomen. Organs such as liver, spleen, kidneys and pancreas can be evaluated. Blood vessels within the abdomen such as the aorta or portal vein can be evaluated as well. We can also evaluate lumps felt in the abdomen or look for appendicitis.

Breast Ultrasound
We can evaluate breast abnormalities found with mammography or palpated by a physician. Breast ultrasound can be used to determine whether a mass found in the breast is solid of fluid filled. We can also check to see if the lesion has blood flow to it but using Doppler. In some instances, it may be helpful to utilize 3D imaging.

Echocardiography
This is used to evaluate the anatomy and blood flow of the heart and it's blood vessels. The valves of the heart and the cardiac function may also be demonstrated because we can see the heart moving during the exam. The movement of all of these structures along with the evaluation with Doppler to determine how well the blood is traveling through the chambers and blood vessels of the heart. This can be done in adults, children and a fetus (unborn baby).

Neurosonology
This is done for evaluation of the brain and spinal cord, usually done on infants. However, there it can be done in adults for the evaluation of blood vessels in the head and is usually called transcranial ultrasound. We do perform exams on infants for their spine or head only.
Musculoskeletal
This term is used to evaluate soft tissue and/or muscles, tendons, and ligaments of arms and legs. It can be used to look at Achilles tendons in the lower leg or rotator cuff in the shoulder. There are other structures that fall into this category as well. This might be used in conjunction with MRI.

Obstetrics and Gynecology
This is the evaluation of the female reproductive system either pregnant or nonpregnant.
In Obstetrics, we can identify the age of the fetus, how it's positioned, as well as whether the fetus appears normal. We use 4D imaging to look at the fetus while it is moving. The 4D appearance allows the mother to bond to a picture that is easily identified by people who don't do ultrasound for a career.
We can also use 3D imaging to look at nonpregnant women in order to identify the uterus and ovaries and their appearance. We use Color Doppler to look at the blood flow of the pelvic organs.

Vascular Ultrasound
This can be used to evaluate and analyze the blood flow of peripheral or abdominal blood vessels. These vessels may include arteries or veins. The most common type of exams includes Carotid exams looking for blockage in the major blood vessels that supply the brain. We also can determine whether someone has a blood clot in their legs or arms. The evaluation of grafts after surgery can also provide the referring doctor information that may change treatment.
