About Sound Medical Imaging
New Conway Business Offers A Sound Choice In Medical Imaging
Mark Cartier does 3-D and even 4-D ultrasounds at his business, Sound Medical Imaging, in Conway, New Hampshire.
In pregnancy evaluations, a live 3-D ultrasound provides a clearer image of the baby inside the womb. "4-D", Cartier explains, "takes the 3-D image and adds motion."
Together, these images can be transferred to videotape or CD and given to patients as keepsakes of their diagnostic exams.
Ultrasound isn't used only in obstetrics and gynecology. Sound Medical Imaging also does abdominal, breast, heart, musculoskeletal and vascular evaluations, using ultrasound to look for cancers, blood clots and other diseases and abnormalities.
Cartier says ultrasound is a "great screening tool" due to its cost and "non-invasive" capabilities. Most exams do not require any special preparation, allowing quicker availability.
"It's a good first problem solver," he says, "and it doesn't use radiation."
Cartier was radiology manager at The Memorial Hospital in North Conway for seven years before opening Sound Medical Imaging. He was chief sonographer at the University of Tennessee and was a sonographer at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. He is a registered diagnostic medical sonographer and X-ray technologist, and he serves on the editorial board for Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Cartier is also involved in the Mount Washington Valley School to Career program, providing local students an opportunity to learn about imaging as a career.
Joining him in the business are his wife, Gay Lynn Cartier, as office manager, and Alex Baker, a registered diagnostic medical sonographer with 10 years experience. Examinations are interpreted by the medical director, Dr. Stanley Whitaker, a board-certified radiologist and a member of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound. Both Whitaker and Baker were formerly with The Memorial Hospital.
Cartier says Mount Washington Valley residents have a growing number of choices when it comes to health care. And Sound Medical Imaging, he says, is one of those choices.
"Being a clinic dedicated specifically to ultrasound allows us to concentrate on the latest applications and technology while still being small enough to provide personal service at a relatively low cost," Cartier says.
Sound Medical Imaging is located in the Conway Professional Plaza on Pleasant Street in Conway Village. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, but Cartier says there's "flexibility" if a patient needs options for scheduling an ultrasound exam. Phone number is (603) 447-3313.
